Hal was born in
Shelby County, Ohio in 1935 and like
to draw at an early age. He also like anything Indian early, after his
Dad found him his first arrowhead.
On a field trip to the Garst Museum in Greenville,
Ohio Hal's teacher showed him the "Signing of the Treaty of Green
Ville" by
Howard Chandler Christy. He was so inspired by it he used
crayons to draw his own on his mother's table cloth. The picture is
now hanging in
the mayor's office in Greenville. Later Hal taught himself how to
paint in oils.
Hal met Dr. Alvin
Salisbury who started a Museum about the Miami Pickawillany Village.
Dr. Salisbury was very impressed with his paintings.
Hal did twelve paintings about the Miami's and twelve on the French
and Indian War.
Since then Hal has painted other Historical events
which are in museums and have been purchased by art collectors. Hal
was proud to say "he has been fortunate enough to have his artwork
viewed on book covers and in a PBS Simon Kenton Film". Also a Canadian
Film company has used one of his paintings in a film about Pontiac
Indians.
Recently
Robert Vantrees introduced Hal to
Carlyle
Hinshaw
and Chuck Bingham of the Bluejackets. Hal said
"they have been kind enough to add
some of my work to the Shawnee Bluejacket Web Site".
